Onionskin heisst übersetzt Zwiebelhaut. Tatsächlich ähnelt die Oberfläche der Murmeln oft einer Zwiebelschale. Onionskins sind aufgrund ihrer farbenpracht und ihrer oft gewaltigen Grösse sehr begehrt unter Sammlern. Bei manchen Exemplaren fällt die Unterscheidung zwischen Onionskin und Josephs Coat ziemlich schwer.

 

Regular Onionskins (normale Onionskins)

Regular Onionskins are not segmented and just consist of two ore more colors:

Paneled Onionskins (Onionskins mit Panelen)

"Paneled" Onionskins are divided in panels. Usually there are 4 panels (very often each color pattern twice) but there are also examples with just 2 or 3 or up to 8 panels. These paneled Onionskins - at least the ones with 4 panels - are quite common and have about the same value as the non-paneled Onionskins.

Bei den "paneled Onionskins" ist die Murmel in mehrere verschiedenfarbige Segmente unterteilt. Ueblich sind 4 Panele, es existieren aber auch Murmeln mit nur zwei Farbsegmenten oder dann solche mit bis zu 8 Panelen. Diese Onionskins sind ähnlich häufig wie die nicht-segmentierten und somit auch in derselben Preislage:

     

 

Lobed Onionskins (Onionskins mit Lappen)

"lobed" Onionskins on the other hand are very rare and desirable. It took a lot of talent and experience to make this type of marble. There are Onionskins with up to 24 lobes, which are real works of art and reach prices of several thousand $ at auction.

"Lobed Onionskins" dagegen sind sehr selten und heiss begehrt. Die Herstellung dieser Murmeln erforderte ein grosses Können. Es gibt Onionskins mit bis zu 24 Lappen. Dies sind richtige Kunstwerke und erzielen regelmässig Preise von mehreren tausend US$.

Clown Onionskins

Onionskins with a lot of different colors on a white base are called "clown"-onionskins. I havn't yet managed to discover what exactly qualifies an onionskin to be a "clown"-Onionskin but I think it would make sense that the white base color is decisive.

Besonders farbintensive Onionskins mit weissem Untergrund nennt man auch "Clown Onionskins". Es ist mir bis heute nicht gelungen, die genauen Kriterien für einen "Clown Onionskin" zu ermitteln. Von der Logik her denke ich mir aber, dass tatsächlich der weisse Untergrund eine gewisse Rolle spielt:

Onionskins with Mica (silber Glitzer)

The appearance of an Onionskin with added mica (silver glitter) flakes is specially exclusive. Examples 2, 3 and 4 are very rare and expensive marbles. 3 and 4 because of their additional red spots in the pattern, marble number 2 has two mica panels which is very uncommon.

Ganz edel kommen die Onionskins daher, wenn sie zusätzlich noch mit Mica (Glitzer) durchsetzt sind. Die Beispiele 2, 3 und 4 sind extrem selten. 3 und 4 wegen ihrer zusätzlichen roten Flecken, bei der zweiten Murmel bestehen zwei der vier Panelen aus Mica.

    

       

Shrunken Onionskins (geschrumpfte Onionskins)

An Onionskin marble is called "shrunken" if the "skin", which usually fills out the whole marble, is shrunk. I don't know if these marbles were made that way on purpose (I guess so because they wouldn't have added mica if it was a fail, would they ?). But it is fact that nowadays these marbles are very popular just because of this difference. And if they are  refined with Mica or even blizzard Mica then every serious marble collector tends to start drooling.....

These marbles always have two pontils !

Bei den "shrunken Onionskins" ist die bemusterte Schicht, welche üblicherweise die ganze Murmel ausfüllt, geschrumpft. Mir ist nicht bekannt, ob dies so gewollt oder ein Unfall während der Herstellung war. Fakt ist, dass heute diese Murmeln gerade wegen dieser Besonderheit gesucht sind. Wenn diese Murmeln zusätzlich noch mit Mica veredelt sind dann sind dies höchst begehrte Murmeln !

Diese Murmeln haben jeweils zwei Pontils !

End-of-day Onionskin (Ende des Tages Murmel)

These marbles were produced - that's the guess - at the end of the day out of the remaining fragments which were laying around. These marbles were not produced for the market. Often the result was a very attractive construction which can sometimes look like a mushroom. Each of these "end-of-day" marbles is unique and therefore very rare.

These marbles have just one pontil.

Diese Murmeln wurden - so vermutet man - am Ende des Tages aus den noch übrigen Murmelfragmenten hergestellt und waren wohl eher nicht für den Verkauf bestimmt. Oft entstanden daraus überaus attraktive Gebilde die entfernt an einen Pilz erinnern. Jede dieser Murmeln ist einzigartig und dementsprechend selten.

Diese Murmeln haben jeweils nur ein Pontil.

Mist Onionskins - transparent with no base color (Onionskins ohne Basisfarbe)

"Mist Onionskins" don't have a base color. When you hold them into a light you can see right through them. This type of marble is rare, I have only ever seen a few examples so far.

"Mist Onionskins" haben keine Grundfarbe, wenn man sie also gegen das Licht hält kann man hindurchschauen. Dieser Typ ist selten, ich habe erst ein paar wenige Exemplare gesehen.

    
    



 

Clouds (Wolken)

In my opinion "Cloud marbles" are just a sub-group of "Onionskins". The term "cloud" is used when the marble pattern consists not of colored streaks - like an Onionskin - but of colored flecks which give them a mottled appearance. The boundaries between "Onionskins" and "Clouds" are fluid which doesn't really matter because it doesn't affect their value at all.

Für mich persönlich sind die "Clouds" eine Untergruppe der Onionskins. Die Bezeichnung "Cloud" wird dann verwendet, wenn die Murmel statt der für die Onionskins typische längliche Musterung eher Flecken (oder Wolken) aufweist. Die Grenze ist fliessend, eine genaue Definition ist nicht möglich und auch nicht notwendig, denn auf die Wertbemessung hat es keinen Einfluss.

 

Rare examples of Clouds just have one pontil which means that this specific marble was made individually and was not part of a group of mables made with of the same cane. These rare marbles are called "single pontil Clouds" -  these are two extraordinary nice examples of that type of marble:

Seltene Exemplare von "Clouds" haben nur einen Abriss, man nennt diese dann "single pontil clouds". Diese Murmeln wurden individuell hergestellt, waren also nicht Teil einer Gruppe, die aus einem Murmelstab gefertigt wurden. Dies sind zwei speziell schöne Murmeln dieses Typs:

 

Confetti Clouds

A real curiosity are the so called "Confetti Cloud"-marbles. At first glance they look like "Onionskins" but under further examination it is obvious that they are a different kind of marble. The pontils are more like a pit, quite different from the pontils we know from old German handmade marbles. Therefore many collectors believe that these marbles were not made in Germany at all, but in (ancient) China. However, there is no evidence for that either way. These marbles are very rare.

Eine Besonderheit stellen die sogenannten "Confetti-Clouds" dar. Auf den ersten Blick ähneln sie den Onionskins, aber bei näherer Betrachtung passen sie überhaupt nicht zu dieser Gruppe. Die pontils (Abrissstellen) unterscheiden sich stark von den üblichen Pontils, sie sind grubenartig und nicht einfach eine raue Stelle. Es deutet vieles darauf hin, dass diese Murmeln nicht in Deutschland hergestellt wurden sondern im alten China. Belege dafür gibt es aber nicht. Solche Murmeln sind sehr selten.

 

Crossovers - Mischlinge

This marble is a crossover between a "Cloud" and an "Onionskin". Two panels have typical "Cloud" markings, two panels are obviously "Onionskin". Crossover marbles are extremely rare.

Diese Murmel ist sehr speziell, sie ist eine Mischung aus Cloud und Onionskin. Zwei der vier Panelen sind "Cloud", zwei "Onionskin". Crossover-Typen sind sehr selten.

This next marble is 2/3 "Onionskin" and 1/3 "Indian" with the typical streaks applied on the surface of the marble. A really beautiful and very rare marble.

Diese nächste Murmeln besteht zu zirka 2/3 aus einem Onionskin und das restliche Drittel präsentiert sich als "Indian". Eine wunderschöne und sehr seltene Murmel.

 

This is a crossover between an "Onionskin" and a "Josephs Coat" marble. Also an extremely rare marble.

Dies ist eine Mischung aus einer "Onionskin" und einer "Josephs Coat" Murmel, ebenfalls extrem selten.
