Lutz

Antique glass marbles with gold glitter as part of the design are called "Lutz" marbles. However, "Lutz" is not just an added material like "Mica" for example. As soon as an antique glass marble has gold dust involved in any way, it is part of the "Lutz" family.

Antike Glasmurmeln mit Goldglitzer heissen bekanntlich "Lutz"-Murmeln. "Lutz" ist nicht einfach ein Zusatz wie zum Beispiel "Mica", denn sobald eine Glasmurmel "Lutz" in sich trägt fällt sie in die "Lutz"-Familie.

Mica

Mica is a marble type but can also be an addition in other marble types like "Onionskins" and "Swirls". Usually the addition of "Mica" increases the value of a marble significantly and some of the most beautiful marbles have "Mica" involved.

"Mica" ist sowohl ein Murmeltyp als auch ein Zusatz in anderen Murmeln wie "Onionskins" oder "Swirls". Oft führt der Zusatz von "Mica" dazu dass sich der Wert einer Murmel deutlich verteuert, viele der schönsten Murmeln der Welt haben "Mica" als Zusatz.

"English" Colors

This term is quite irritating because marbles with "English" colors were made in Germany too, probably after WWI. "English"-colored marbles (usually Joseph's Coats and Swirls) have very vibrant colors. In earlier days it was assumed that these marbles were made in England because most of them were found there (and not in the US). But this can be easily explained: By that time the Americans had their own very popular machine made marble industry and didn't import marbles from Germany anymore. So most of the exports from Germany went to Great Britain.

Speziell farbintensive Murmeln (speziell Joseph's Coats und Swirls) werden oft mit "English Colors" (englische Farben) beschrieben. Dies ist irreführend denn auch diese Murmeln wurden allesamt in Deutschland hergestellt. Da man aber viele dieser Murmeln in England fand ging man anfänglich fälschlicherweise davon aus, dass die dort hergestellt wurden. Diese Murmeln wurden vermutlich nach dem ersten Weltkrieg hergestellt und wenn man sich vor Augen führt, dass zu diesem Zeitpunkt die Amerikaner bereits eine eigene (Maschinen) Murmel Industrie hatten kann man nachvollziehen dass zu diesem Zeitpunkt der Hauptabnehmer für solche Murmeln die Engländer waren.

Aventurine

You can usually find "Aventurine" in the green colored bands of English colored Joseph's Coats. Also in "English" colored Swirls. It is a form of quartz that give a shimmering/sparkling effect. It can be found in other colors too, for example black or blue but green is definately the most common color for "Aventurine".

"Aventurine" findet man für gewöhnlich in den grünen Bändern von "English colored Swirls" und "Joseph's Coats". Es handelt sich um eine Form von Quartz die einen Glitzereffekt hervorruft. Man kann es auch in anderen Farben finden, z. B. in Schwarz oder Blau. Grün ist aber mit Abstand die häufigste Farbe mit "Aventurine".

"Oxblood" findet man meines Wissens nicht in antiken handgemachten Murmeln. Es handelt sich um eine braun-rote Farbe die manchmal in alten Maschinenmurmeln verwendet wurde.

Dichroic

If I had to describe "Dichroic" I would say it is "fairy dust". It sparkles in all colors and it is an addition which is used by some contemporary marble artists. I really like "Dichroic" in modern handmade marbles.

Wenn ich "Dichroic" beschreiben müsste dann würde ich sagen es ist Feenstaub. Es wird von modernen Glaskünstler als Zusatz für ihre Murmeln verwendet und erzeugt einen wunderbaren Glitzereffekt. Ich mag die Verwendung von "Dichroic" in modernen Murmeln sehr.
